Wallaces Heritage Trail

This interpretive trail explores the history of the high plains. An ideal full day activity if you are beginning in the Valley (Bright, Harrietville or Mount Beauty) or a great half day activity if starting from Falls Creek. This 6.5km walk will take approx 2.5 hours and starts at the Wallace Hut car parking area. Walk down the path to Wallace's Hut - about 750m, this section of the trail is wheelchair accessible along a dirt track. Wallace's Hut is the oldest surviving cattlemen's hut, built in 1889 by the three Wallace brothers - Arthur, William and Stewart. It is set in a lovely shaded area which is a good spot for a picnic or a rest stop. There is also a pit toilet in this area.

Continue past the hut to the aqueduct, turn right and then follow the grassy aqueduct track past the Rover Scout Chalet. The track here climbs gently to Cope Hut and the Bogong High Plains Road. Cope Hut was built by the Ski Club of Victoria in 1929 after the state experienced a surge of skiing in the 1920s. There is another pit toilet here and it's another good spot for a rest break or lunch.  From the Bogong High Plains Road, you can return to the start of the walk either by following the road for about 1.5 kilometres or by taking the walking track down a heath-filled valley to the Wallaces Hut track. For some brilliant views, extend your walk to the summit of nearby Mt Cope. On your return, drop in at Falls Creek alpine village for a drink and a perfect view of a superb high country sunset.
