Onesie Weekend 2015 has produced an absolute classic at Falls Creek.
We call Spring "Easy Season" around these parts when sunny skies, soft snow and good times take over the mountain. This onesie weekend was no exception, delivering one of the best September weekends at Falls in recent times.
From early Saturday the onesies were out in force as visitors took to the village and slopes in their animal and old-school best. Busting out the straight skis (and a Glen Plake hairdo in one case), the old school 80’s onesies were a sight to behold! Our very own Samara Tanton certainly held up her end of the onesie bargain as she hosted the Pete’s Snow Jam kids party in Slalom Plaza on Saturday in an awesome silver and red number!
A popular part of Onesie Weekend has become the Amazing Race where visitors have 24 hours to collect photos of as many items on a scavenger hunt checklist as they all – all whilst wearing a onesie. A great number of teams took part in this year’s race to try and take the grand prize of a $1,000 stay at Diana Lodge in 2016. The competition was tight but in the end "Team Super Slippers" took out the grand prize with some dedicated hiking to some key Cross Country locations for bonus points. 2nd place went to the Evans Family and 3rd place to the Bond family.
Sunday was all about celebration and good fun as the weekend wound to a close in spectacular weather. A new addition to the festivities, the Onesie Mogul Competition proved a big hit with a good turnout from Falls Creek Race Club members (and few old locals to boot). Australian legend Britt Cox’s father Graham was on hand for expert adjudication as the onesie-clad competitiors took to the course. In what shouldn’t have been a surprise, local girl Airlie Bowles proved too good for the rest in the kids division (fresh off a big win in the Interschools Championships). In the adults category it was a battle of the dynastars as the men negotiated the bumps on the long straight skis (clad in fluoro of course). The final result showed there must be something in a name – Laif Moegel taking out first prize. Both winners were awarded a voucher for Stingray Restaurant.
A big thanks to everyone for taking part and the excellent sponsors Stingray, Diana Lodge, Koki Snowsports Hire, Snowrider Rentals, Falls Creek Hotel, Steve Lee’s Back-country Tours, Falls Creek Snowmobile Tours, Foodworks Falls Creek, Milch Café & Bar and Falls Creek Ski Lifts for making the weekend possible.
