Packhorse Heritage Trail Falls Creek

Take a hike through history along this historic route to Howmans Gap.

The Packhorse Heritage Trail is the newest addition to Falls Creek's world-class network of high country walking trails. The newly developed trail takes hikers from Falls Creek Village to the Howmans Gap Alpine Centre along the old packhorse trail that early cattlemen and surveyors used to access the Bogong High Plains.

This trail has long been recalled by Falls Creek old timers but it has only been since the 2003 bushfires that it has become exposed again. The trail is now a Falls Creek icon, offering first-hand insights into the devastation caused by the fires and the incredible regeneration seen since.

Walk Specifics:

  • 4.2km distance (8.4km return)
  • 1:10 maximum gradient
  • Suitable for intermediate level walkers
  • One way pickup point at Howmans Gap

How do I get there?

From the village, walk along the Bogong High Plains Rd past the village entrance towards Mt beauty (park in Gully Carpark if needed). The trail entrance is around 150mt past the entrance on the right hand side of the road with steps leading down into the valley and then left to the trail.
