The final week of what has been an eventual winter will finish with a burst of cold, wintery weather. A cold blast from Antarctica is expected late Monday and snow is forecast to fall down to a 1,000 metres on Tuesday.

That's the 'icing on the cake' for anyone who is taking advantage of the last days of the alpine resort's winter season. Sub zero temperatures provide an ideal situation for the grooming operators who toil through the night to restore the surface of the resort's vast array of snow-covered slopes.

A similar scenario takes place with the cross-country grooming team who ensure the 30-plus kilometres of trails are in good shape for the skating and classic skiers.

Heavily reduced priced for ski lift tickets and accommodation are always offered in the latter weeks of the winter season.

The very last weekend at Falls Creek Alpine Resort, Saturday and Sunday, October 2 and 3 respectively, will be a colourful, fun-filled celebration with a smorgasbord of activities including fancy dress, face painting, balloons, clown activities, the last appearance by Pete the friendly Snow Dragon, BBQ, discounted lift tickets and much more.

"Falls Creek is a family mountain and we've developed some fun family activities for closing weekend. There's still plenty of snow and we're all getting outdoors and having fun" said Michael Callahan General Manager Falls Creek Ski Lifts.

The re-run of last Saturday's tied AFL grand final will be screened at numerous venues throughout Falls Creek.

On Sunday the lifts will close and the alpine resort will commence its non winter activities which range from fly-fishing to walks in the stunning Alpine National Park high which vary from one hour to one day.
