The Ice Plunge - Official Home of Falls Creek Alpine Resort

To celebrate the first day of winter (but not the official opening of the snow season) the Falls Creek community will be holding an Ice Plunge which also takes place in northern hemisphere communities to raise funds for worthy organisations.

Falls Creek-based SES was the benefactor from this event, which entailed challenging human endeavour. Last year around 70 participants ran into the mile high Rocky Valley Lake to continue a winter ritual that is continually growing in North America where "polar bear clubs" go outdoor bathing or swimming in the middle of winter to fund-raise for charity.

This event, to recognise the arrival of winter, kicks off a winter season of fun-filled events at Falls Creek Alpine Resort.

“It was a great way to celebrate the beginning of winter. Over 100 brave people joined in to celebrate the start of winter with the Ice Plunge,” said Will Flamsteed Marketing Manager Falls Creek Resort Management.

“The water at Rocky Valley Dam was nearly as warm as the outside temp of about 8 degrees.
“Why do we do it? “That crosses your mind as you plow into the water and dunk your head under the icy cold water.”

Stewart Wheeler General Manager of the just-completed Quay West Resort and Spa at Falls Creek was one of his new team which participated in today's Ice Plunge at the alpine resort.

Wheeler said: "It was B.... cold!. Our management team joined our new neighbours and jumped into the crisp and cool Rocky Valley Lake to celebrate the first day of winter.

"The Ice Plunge was very well organised by the community and the local SES members provide open fires at the edge of the lake.

"We learnt our lesson to not be the first into the water - it is difficult to get back out as the more experienced 'polar plungers wait until the first timers have gone in then they follow.

"It was a great team building opportunity for nine of the Quay West Resort staff to be amongst the fit and healthy people who took part in the alpine resort's Ice Plunge which signals the start of winter up here."
