Cold snap brings mid-Summer snow to Falls Creek

Falls Creek received an unseasonal Wintery blast yesterday, bringing snow and sub-zero temperatures to those altitude training and preparing for the weekend's Billycart Derby.

You could have been forgiven for thinking it were August yesterday as the temperatures plummetted below zero at Falls Creek Alpine Village. It is not completely unusual for Falls Creek to receive snow in January. However, normally Summer days at Falls Creek are filled with pleasant sunny weather - perfect for relaxing or swimming at Rocky Valley Lake, so to receive a Wintery blast in January has certainly given a shock to the system.
Resort guests were outside all over the village to take in the spectacle of the unseasonal snow. For those staying at Falls to conduct altitude training, it was business as usual with training continuing through the weather. Guests keen to test out Falls Creek's hills for the weekend's upcoming Billy Cart Derby were given the unique experience of driving a cart in the middle of a snowstorm.
For over three hours, the resort experienced heavy flurries of snow, covering windscreens in the village. At higher altitude in the ski-fields, up to 2cm was recorded in places. For the past two years there have had encouraging snowfalls in the lead up to the snow season allowing for some good skiing on opening weekend. Locals are taking yesterday’s falls as an omen of a great snow season ahead for Winter 2012.
With the brief storm passing by in the late afternoon, sunny skies and mild temperatures soon replaced the sleet and snow. Forecasts for the weekend's are for much more favourable sunny conditions, perfect for the Billy Cart Derby and Bush Bash celebrations.
