Night Activities @ Falls

It was a special night at Falls Creek on Saturday as it unveiled its latest product - Night Skiing on Wombat's Ramble. The 2.2km run accessed by the Falls Express Quad Chair is most likely the longest night skiing run in Australia.

Superb snowmaking efforts throughout the last 4 weeks has allowed for a solid snow base of 66cm+ on Wombat's Ramble along with other open snowmaking ski runs at the resort. Night skiing is scheduled to run Monday to Thursday next week for guests at the resort.

Big chill continues (as does mammoth snowmaking output)

This morning it was well below zero again and allowing for the wind chill factor -10.2C.

The mercury may not get above zero throughout the day and the resort guests boarded the first ski lift it was still sub zero (-3.9C) and the mammoth snowmaking effort was still going strong.

Mother nature has delivered below average temperatures throughout SE Australia for well over a weekend it may warm up slightly when the predicted snow showers eventuate.

There's snow forecast overnight and early next week. The hard-working snowmaking teams will continue creating a blanket of snow on Sun Valley's popular beginner to intermediate terrain and intend to expand the snowmaking output to include Ruined Castle and Scotts.

As the weather remains icy cold in cities such as Sydney (which has just shivered through its coldest June morning in 61 years and seen 100 year-old records broken) the alpine resort's snowmakers are continuing to build a foundation for the busy weeks ahead.

After showing what they can do with an artillery of high-tech snowmaking technology on Wombat's Ramble, Drovers, Main Street and Boardwalk. they'll now focus on making snow elsewhere.

As always mother nature will be the key to how much (and when) the hard working (usually nocturnal) snowmakers can produce.

Currently the temperatures is a 'balmy' -2.3C and with wind chill factor -8.2C.

Snow showers are expected later in the week and for the foreesable future there will be non-stop snowmaking in Sun Valley

Week-long cold snap ideal for snowmaking.

A week-long cold snap with temperatures as low as minus 7C have enhanced the resorts snow cover on popular runs such as the 2.2km Wombat's Ramble (which will be open for night skiing and boarding tomorrow night between 6pm - 9 pm), Main Street, Drovers, Mouse Trap and the beginner-friendly slopes near the Snowsports School headquarters.

From 3am last Sunday morning the vast array of snowmaking machines have been operating around the clock to provide an acceptable snow cover for the first week of the school holidays.

The Pete Train, a new covered carpet for the 3- 5 year olds', has begun operation in the area designated for very young children who are participating in supervised on-snow activities.

With this week-long cold snap, it is as good as it gets in Australia for snowmaking and some natural snow is forecast for tomorrow and later in the week.

Drovers Dream opened today

After it rained it snowed and the temperatures did as expected - fell below zero. For the next three or four days there will be 'snowmaking windows' and fresh snow is forecast onTuesday.

Falls Creek now has the most lifts open in Victoria with the beginner-friendly Drovers Dream opening today (coinciding with the school holidays) for the first time this winter.

A couple nights ago all the floodlights on the 2.2km Wombats Ramble were lit for a trial session of night skiing.

With five lifts turning the first influx of school holiday guests have a choice of beginner to intermediate snow-covered terrain in Sun Valley and they can also check out how effective the increased amount of snowmaking is on Wombats Ramble.
This morning it is minus 2.5 C and the BOM is forecasting several very cold days and nights ahead.
