Winning GreenEDGE Cycling Team takes on the terrain of Falls Creek

Falls Creek Alpine Resort recently welcomed the GreenEDGE Cycling team for a training camp, fresh from their recent victory at the Tour Down Under.

The GreenEDGE team will be taking advantage of Falls Creek’s world-class road cycling terrain and altitude training environment as they continue their preparations for the 2012 season, which includes the team’s first Tour de France.

Most of the team will stay at Falls Creek Alpine Resort for five days, training on cycling routes such as the Bogong High Plains.

David Herman, CEO, Falls Creek Resort Management, said: “Falls Creek Alpine Resort is proud to see the GreenEDGE Cycling Team at the resort. Falls Creek offers elite athletes and professional sporting franchises the opportunity to prepare for events in altitude without the expense of having to travel overseas. Road cyclists such as the GreenEDGE team can take advantage of our world-class road cycling routes with the benefits of training in altitude environment right here in Victoria.”

A major part of the GreenEDGE team was first at the resort with the more riders arriving this week, including Tour Down Under winner Simon Gerrans.
Gerrans is excited to return to Falls Creek Alpine Resort for training. Gerrans said: “After the high of our win at the Tour Down Under, it’s great to get back to training. We have been testing our skills on some of the best road cycling tracks in the country here at Falls Creek, and it really puts us in good stead for the European competitions ahead of us this year.”

The GreenEDGE Cycling Team joins the likes of the Russian National Track Endurance Cycling Team who also trained at Falls Creek Alpine Resort late last year.

Falls Creek Alpine Resort has hosted many of Australia’s sporting elite for altitude training, such as the Geelong Football Club, Melbourne Rebels, Australian leading long and middle distance runner, Craig Mottram and, champion runner, Steve Moneghetti.

Road cycling is a primary focus for Falls Creek with the Alpine Resort hosting the start and finish of the upcoming 3 Peaks Challenge in March 2012.
