Good start to the winter season - Official Home of Falls Creek Alpine Resort

(Updated Thursday 17th June 2010)

Falls Creek-based Steven Lee, a skiing legend, who is about to experience his 46th winter, says:"We had a good dose of snow for opening weekend and the snow falling now will assist in opening more lifts.

"It is looking pretty white on the ground there's quite a few centimetres cover already, it is building up.

"We could get between 15- 20cm out of this storm cycle. The light, dry snow coming down now is promising.

"They've already built a bit of a base on Scotts and Ruined Castle and if we get a half metre dump it would get things up and running.

The first weekend of the 2010 snow season has been a very enjoyable experience for the many visitors to the alpine resort including our youngest Winter Olympian Freestyle skier Britteny Cox.

Having produced almost 100,000 cubic metres of snow in the last seven days there was more than enough skiing and boarding terrain for those seeking an early days' riding.

With more snow forecast (and sub zero overnight temperatures) it is one of three significant season openings the alpine resort has had in the last decade.

The 2.2km Wombat's Ramble is in very good condition with a substantial snow cover top-to-bottom. There's also a good cover on Main Street which is regarded as ideal teaching terrain by the Snowsports School's instructors.

The covered Mousetrap ski lift is ideal for beginner skiers or boarders who are just starting to learn how to turn their skis or board.

Hon Tim Holding, Victoria's Minister of Tourism, has officially declared Falls Creek's winter season open after skiing down the 2.2km Wombat's Ramble, the longest green run in Australia, with Britteny Cox the youngest Winter Olympic skier ever to represent Australia.

Holding said:"It was awesome! My one run down a run which will be lit for night sking has great snow cover after five days (and nights) of snowmaking.

"The last time I wore a Falls Creek jacket the suggestion was I should enter the Kangaroo Hoopet but instead I went hiking and I didn't take it off for three days.

"This winter I will compete in the the Kangaroo Hoppet as suggested and not go hiking.
"I love this part of Australia, it is the most beautiful place in the world. I like coming here year-round. Thousands of families will have a fabulous time, the team who run the alpine resort put their heart and soul into it.

"The substantial investment ensures guests have an extraordinary experience.
"I had the privelege of declaring the $60 million All Seasons Gateway open. It is a great way to welcome visitors to Falls Creek, an unbelievable five-star addition to the Falls Creek experience.
