AIS Float Tank - Falls Creek

(Updated Tuesday 28 October 2008)

Summit Ridge Alpine Lodge has installed an acquisition from The Australian Institute of Sport which will be enhance the alpine resorts reputation with the annual influx of athletes.

A float tank, made in South Australia and used by The Australian Institute of Sport's Olympic training programs, has been added to the athlete-friendly resorts line-up of facilities.

During the past 20 years the remarkable effects of the float tank have been systematically studied and applied in such areas as health care, medicine, fitness training and sports science.

The modern float tank (such as the one now at Summit Ridge) is equipped with powerful underwater speakers and in-tank video facilities. Any skill or information can be learnt more effectively and efficiently in this way while the floater is in a deep state of relaxation.

Richard Meadows, the Adelaide-based manufacturer of the float tanks, said: "Athletes (and skiers in the resort's winter season), particularly endurance runners will use the 'float room' within Summit Ridge to reinveregerate themselves and gain the recovery benefits of spending time in a shallow 30 cm pool of 25% saturated Epsom Salts solution five times denser and more buoyant than sea water.

"The immense benefits from floating includes improved circulation and regeneration of muscle tissue.

"Strenuous physical exercise can cause a rapid build-up of lactic acid (a toxic by-product of anaerobic glycolysis) in the muscles; this is experienced as pain, fatigue and cramps which can last for days.

"Floating is one method of reducing the effects of lactic acid and removing other waste materials from the body. This reduces the risk of over-training.

"Most sports injuries are not contact injuries but are the result of inappropriate muscle tension. Floating has been shown to loosen the muscles and give athletes a greater degree of control over their autonomic nervous systems, reducing the risk of injury during training or competition."
