If you are seeking an affordable, fun-filled family holiday, there's an alpine resort that offers both. Falls Creek in the heart of the Victorian high country, has become a very popular holiday destination for numerous reasons. One, and possibly the most persuasive, is the cost of accommodation in the non-winter months at the picturesque resort.
|
The tariffs at apartments and lodges throughout Falls Creek offer some incredible value and savings in the summer months. For example a one bedroom (four share) apartment at the Falls Creek Country Club costs $140 a night or at Nelse Lodge it is a very reasonable $65 per person for bed and breakfast.
There's also another plus for the forthcoming family holiday which usually begins on Boxing Day. The cost of filling the family car has become more acceptable now that the price of oil and in turn petrol has fallen.
Money can't buy the natural elements visitors encounter when they explore the alpine environment. Whilst the resort community offers child-friendly free entertainment it is discovering the natural elements which must be included in a trip to alpine resorts such as Falls Creek.
In the school holidays Parks Victoria will offer guided interpretive walks. There’s also self-guided walks around the resort and onto the vast Bogong High Plains. For the healthy, adventurous types, a walk between Falls Creek and Hotham is a significant achievement.
For the less active the alpine resort’s summer calendar of events kicks–off with the 'Big Fella' Festival on New Year’s Day.
It's the festival 30,000 years in the making... reviving the tradition of Indigenous Australians visiting the high plains to share and celebrate their unique culture. Albeit with a modern twist featuring some of the best Indigenous music and performance groups in the country, plus traditional arts, crafts, tucker, games and dance for all Australians to enjoy!
Big Fella is the indigenous name for Mt Bogong, Victoria's highest mountain which is easily visible from everywhere around Falls Creek.
Falls Creek will also recognise the early settlers with a celebration at Wallace's Hut (the oldest remaining iconic Cattleman's Hut in the alps) on January 10, 2009.
It will be the 120th birthday of the Wallace's Hut and to celebrate the community are throwing a huge party! The Village Bowl stage, in the heart of Falls Creek, will come alive with a bush band, BBQ, beer garden as we dance the night away – cowboy / girl hats are optional!
The local community are holding a Mountain Murder Mystery event at Wallace's Hut on Saturday January 31. Entertainment bush-style under the stars at an incredibly poignant location. It is being billed as "An overnighter not for the faint hearted”.
The Bogong High Plains Road from Falls Creek across to the popular Blue Duck at Anglers Rest, is currently being sealed. So if you have a sense of adventure this is the last opportunity to drive through the Alpine National Park to the rustic family-friendly pub at the confluence of the Mitta Mitta, Cobungra and Bundara Rivers.
A brief detour off the Bogong High Plains Road (which leads to the Blue Duck Inn) provides access to either Wallace's and Cope Huts, which are a short walk from a smallish car park.
