Falls Creek set to give wings to fly v Australia pro cycling team - Falls Creek

(Updated Wednesday 16th December 2009)

Creme de la creme of Australian cycling to participate in week-long training stint at Falls Creek with National Altitude Training Centre (NATC) in late December.

The MD of the Fly V Australia Pro Cycling Team, Chris White, said:" The focus of the nine members of our team which will train at Falls Creek is to prepare for the national titles which will be held within a week after we have completed our first visit to the alpine resort."

"We have a vision to be part of the UCI PRO Tour and our objective is to compete in the 2012 Tour de France." White went on to say.

Although the Team has an international 'feel' it consists of 10 Australian riders. The Team roster includes some of Australia's emerging stars. Amongst our hot prospects is Bernie Sulzberger current Australian Criterium champion and the first person in 41 years to win Super Week in the USA by leading from start to finish.

Jonathan Cantwell, a rising star in Australian cycling who has won 29 races this year, Aaron Kemps former member of Lance Armstrong's ASTANA team, Darren Rolfe, former Australian Champion and winner of the 2009 Tour of Geelong and Ben Kersten, who has made a successful transition from the track to road racing in 2009.

Kersten won the prestigious American US PRO criterium championships held at Downers Grove near Chicago in August

Team Director Sportif, Henk Vogels, himself a former professional having competed in Europe and a Tour de France rider said "We are very much looking forward to getting to Falls Creek and shutting all of the distractions out so that we can focus solely on the National championships.

"Having the ability to both train at altitude and sea level and then recover at 1,600 meters will be the ideal preparation for the Nationals."

Vogels went on to say "There are studies showing training at sea level (which we can do whilst at Falls Creek) and recovering at altitude provides significant performance benefits."

White added "These athletes are the foundation of what is the best cycling team ever assembled in this country.

"There's a lot of work to be done but there's a lot of upside. We are very serious about the prospects of our riders and we are certain the time spent Falls Creek will have a very positive outcome."

"The nine members of our team will be supported by 'soigneur' Jono Coulter and director sportif Henk Vogels."
