Enjoying The Spring Melt - Falls Creek

As the snow melts, and replenishes the rivers (reputedly full of trout) and lakes in the Victorian high country, alpine resorts such as Falls Creek switch to non winter activities.

Spring, summer and autumn at this picture-postcard resort is enhanced by the abundant array of natural attributes. And the opportunity for visitors to take themselves out of their comfort zone.

One example is the 'Wild Walk' between Falls Creek and hotham. In winter brightly clad skiers and boarders are whisked between the two popular Victorian resorts by helicopter in six minutes. In the non winter months a reasonably fit person would barely make it in six hours.

In fact some guests would take up to eight hours to walk between the resorts, along a well marked trail, to ensure they appreciated the various vistas, the numerous wild animals such as brumbies (which roam the higher elevations of the Bogong High Plains), the smorgasbord of wildflowers and the ancient snowgums.

For the less adventurous there's ample opportunity to learn how to cast a fly rod, attend a painting workshop or discover one of the numerous cattleman's huts quite close to Falls Creek Alpine Resort.

Family-friendly events will be staged at the alpine resort throughout the school holidays and Parks Victoria will offer its annual Summer Ranger Program.

Another aspect of the high country (reputedly 10 degrees cooler than the low elevations) in summer is the regional produce and cool climate wine which is renowned for its intense flavour.

In the near future the Bogong High Plains Road will be sealed and create the sought-after link with the picture-postcard, historical towns of Mitta Mitta and Omeo. And of course the rustic Blue Duck, one of Victoria's oldest country-style pubs.

Self-contained accommodation packages (which could include wine-tasting or a horse trek into the Alpine National Park) cost from $495 per couple for three nights.

For more details check-out the alpine resort's informative website www.fallscreek.com.au or call 1800 232 557 (1800 2 FALLS).
