Francis Jackson Falls Creek's Snowsport School Director said:"This is the longest period of consistently dry, soft snow I've seen. We've had a month of perfect snow quality normally found overseas.
"The skiing and boarding is unreal! If there was ever a time to come and experience how much fun it is - its now!'
The snow has been falling all day at Falls Creek and it is snowing at Bogong Village 15km below Victoria's largest alpine resort.
And tomorrow the snowline is expected to go even lower, possibly as low as 700 metres above sea level.
Bottom line is - an excellent cover of fresh, dry fluffy snow resort wide. With a snow enthusiast-friendly forecast for significant snow (and sub zero overnight and daytime temperatures) for another week.
Day after day of snowfalls throughout July and in early August has resulted in the alpine resort’s 20 year average snowpack being surpassed and there’s more good news – significant snow forecast later in the week.
Falls Creek, the largest resort in the Victorian Alps, is reporting an average base of 134cm (142cm in the Village Bowl) but it isn’t the amount of snow that is creating excitement in the picture-postcard alpine resort - it is the quality of the snow!
An extensive period off sub zero overnight temperatures has ensured the snow has remained ‘powdery’ and right now the alpine community is suggesting you drop whatever you are doing and head to the mountains.
It isn’t just the snow that is falling – the cost of filling the car is also falling. Whilst skiers and boarders are enjoying the best quality snow for some years the biggest weekly falls in petrol prices has occurred.
Petrol fell about 6.1cents per litre or about 4% last week according to the Australian Institute of Petroleum’s weekly report. It also reported World oil is being traded at $US 125 a barrel from a $US150 peak.
Now that’s a good combination (for snow enthusiasts) a healthy reduction in the cost of getting to the snow and the best quality snow for many winters.
July was very good but August could be even better!! Every run at Falls Creek is in excellent condition so regardless of ability there’s a trail which will surpass expectations.
Plus cross country skiers are also relishing the resort's abundant array of skating and classical of groomed trails.
