Australian Olympic Committee's Athlete Commission creates history - Official Home of Falls Creek Alpine Resort

(Updated Saturday 11th September 2010)

The first meeting of Australian Olympic Committee's Athlete Commission outside of a capital city today at Falls Creek Alpine Resort has created history.

Fiona DeJong, Director of Sport at the AOC, said:"As a large percentage of our Winter Olympic athletes come from Victoria we felt it would show some appreciation of what they do. There's a lot of cold moments which go along
with training and competing in winter events.

"All the athletes, summer or winter, share their knowledge and it is an opportunity to get out of our boardroom and into the backyard of the winter athletes such as Jenny Owens and Paul Murray.

Murray, who went to school at Mt Beauty, and returned to teach Physical Education at the town's Secondary College, is amongst the high-profile athletes who are elected to the Athlete Commission. After competing for Australia in two Winter Olympics he and Jenny Owens were elected on to what is a voice for Olympic Athletes at the Vancouver Winter Games Murray said "We are a sounding board for the AOC. Myself and the other nine elected athletes are exploring ways to help athletes who make the transition from competitive sports to normal life. "There's a lot of experience on the committee and amazing line-up of athletes who have been awarded an Order of Australia or won a swag of gold medals.
"The decision to hold this historic meeting at Falls Creek is a win win for everybody."

A team from Falls Creek Resort Management will meet with an Olympic Committee delegation this afternoon to introduce its Altitude Training Project.

"From an FCRM perspective, we are extremely pleased the Olympic Committee's Athletes Commission has chosen to meet in Falls Creek," said David Herman
CEO of Falls Creek Resort Management.

"Falls Creek has a proud history and connection with elite winter and summer athletes. We have long been seen as a unique training environment offering local athletes the opportunity to experience the benefits of altitude in their own backyard.

"We look forward to harnessing this unique environment with the development of integrated altitude training facilities. The project combines the best of our natural landscape including running tracks, road and mountain bike trails and a 2km straight water course on the Rocky Valley Lake with state of the art built facilities.

"Our intention is to develop world class training facilities that will principally support the needs of our athletics community on an all seasons basis. The future development of Altitude Training Facilities is an exciting project for the Falls Creek Community.
