(Updated Friday 19 June 2009)

It's a bargain day today at Falls Creek. It will cost $34 ($17 for a child) to access six ski lifts and enjoy a days' skiing or boarding at the alpine resort. More lifts could open on the weekend.

After an unbelievable start, one of the best for many, many, winters there's lots of snow-covered terrain at Falls Creek. Its ski in/ski out. And at half price, That's an opportunity not to be missed!!!

The resort's Ski Patrol are reporting good to very good boarding and skiing on Towers and Wombats Ramble. Drovers area is open with easy turns and room to practice.

Lift queues are currently non existent. Just imagine the bang for your buck when you don't have to wait to ride the chairlifts!!!

Australian farmers can expect their best winter crop in four years and alpine resort such as Falls Creek are experiencing one of the better starts to a winter season in a decade.

The momentum created by an early snow dump has led to an avalanche of requests for ski in - ski out accommodation at Falls Creek.

Arguably on of the southern hemisphere's most photogenic snow-covered villages Falls Creek is actually a four season resort which is inundated with snow enthusiasts throughout its winter season.

Whilst Victoria's largest alpine resort has a well honed 'Snow Farming' program, which is carried out by its behind-the-scenes nocturnal team, it also offers a multitude of snow-related activities (apart from the obvious skiing and boarding). And many are free, or a nominal charge.

One example is five year olds and under can board or ski the alpine resort's snow-covered slopes at no charge if they are accompanied by an adult. And a Free Kids' Helmet is provided with rental snow equipment rental for 14 year old and younger skiers or boarders.

Free entertainment for the entire family includes the Pete the Snow Dragon shows, in the Village Bowl, each Wednesday and Saturday and the very popular Night Spectaculars (every Thursday in the Village Bowl) in July and August.

A cool start to the week is good news for snow enthusiasts. Currently there's 35km of groomed cross-country trails and the resort's ski patrol are stating there's a good to very good cover of fresh packed snow for boarders and skiers.

And the other good news is ski lift ticket prices are still very good value-for-money. A ski lift day ticket today (and until Friday) is only $36 for a child and $68 for an adult.

The first weekend of the season skiers and boarders have gone back to work (or school) and anyone who has a day off will relish the freshly groomed downhill or cross-country terrain.

If you are out early (before nine) you may see Ben Derrick taking advantage of the early snow before he starts his daily duties with Falls Creek Resort Management.
Derrick said yesterday:"The majority of the Home Trails around the Nordic Bowl are well groomed. Plus the trail out to Watchbed Creek and the McKay Loop, which is currently rated excellent, are a bonus for this time of the winter."

The slope groomers and the snowmakers (in tandem with a bountiful supply of natural snow) have worked extremely hard behind the scenes this week to ensure the maximum number of ski lifts could be turned on today.

Check out the network of well placed snowcams around the alpine resort they show just how good the snow cover is right now and it is only the start of what promises to be a snowy winter.

(Updated Thursday 11 June 2009)

Whilst the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting icy cold nights in Melbourne, and severe frosts throughout NE Victoria, alpine resorts such as Falls Creek are relishing the cool weather.

Tomorrow Victoria’s largest alpine resort will open about six ski lifts for snow enthusiasts and anyone contemplating a visit to the snow-covered resort. And there’s more good news, particularly for families with young children, the price of a day ski lift ticket ski lessons and the hire of snow equipment is very affordable.

Lift tickets for Friday, Saturday and Sunday are only $39 adults and $19 for a child. The ideal option, a learn to ski or board package for only $49 ($29 child) for a lift/lesson ticket, is suggested for visitors who only need a couple of lifts in the early stages of learning to ski and board.

Falls Creek Alpine Resort has groomed about 15km of its vast network of cross country trails and the cost use the trails has not increased this winter. A day ticket for an adult is $12, a child $6 and a family pass is only $30.

Another offer to entice visitation to the alpine resort this weekend, the first of the 2009 winter, is an ‘opening special’ of $20 per car for Resort Entry. Snow play visitors will be allowed Free Resort Entry after 2pm.

There’s the very popular Free Pete the Snow Dragon Show at 5pm on Saturday in the Village Bowl, Free Gully chairlift rides, heavily discounted accommodation - 50% off – plus all the resort’s popular cafes, bars and restaurants will be open.
