Artist's Camp - Falls Creek

This March, some of Australia's most talented artists will call Falls Creek home for a week of being challenged and inspired by the spectacular surroundings of the High Plains!


Getting Involved in this year's Artist Camp:



There are a number of events and activities open to the public which include:

Wednesday March 17th - Artists arrive

Artists will arrive at Falls Creek in the evening at will stay the night at Huski.

Thursday March 18th - Bushwalk.

Starting early, join us for a bushwalk from the Mt. Loch carpark (near Mt. Hotham), then continuing along the Alpine walking track past Derrick hut, down Swindlers spur to Dibbin Hut where we will camp overnight.

Friday March 19th - Bushwalk continued
Walk on past Cobungra Gap, Basalt Temple and up onto the Bogong High Plains past Mt. Jim. We will be camping overnight at Tawonga Huts.

Saturday March 20th -Final day of bushwalk
Today includes a morning walk back to Pretty Valley Pondage. Once back in Falls Creek village, enjoy a night of recuperation at Huski which will include dinner.

Sunday March 21st - 'En Plein Air' outdoor artmaking at the Ruined Castle near Mount McKay.
Starting at 10am, all are welcome to experience this popular session where you are able to to see the artists at work, out in the open at 'Ruined Castle'. The artists will be able to answer all of your questions about their processes and inspiration as they develop their signature pieces from the camp.


About the Artists...



Nine incredibly talented artists will be taking part in the Artist's Camp 2010 at Falls Creek, including:


David Hugh Thomas
- paintings and drawings


David Hugh Thomas has been a practising artist for over 25 years. He makes paintings, drawings and prints as well as installations and short film. David has exhibited his work at a variety of venues, from artist-run spaces, such as Westspace, to the Heide Museum of Art, A.C.C.A, and the William Mora Galleries. In the nineties, David lived in New York City for 5 years, where he exhibited at the Australian Consulate, and various galleries in Soho, including the Andre Zarre Gallery. David also curates exhibitions, and has worked at the Monash University Museum of Art for many years, where he helps look after the collection.

David H. Thomas and Peter Bennetts founded the Falls Creek Artist Camp in 2005, this year being the fifth event. The aim is, to bring a diverse group of contemporary artists to Falls Creek, experience the exhilarating atmosphere of the High Plains, and provide a suitable ambiance for creating artwork.

Roger Beeston


Roger Beeston is the founding director of RBA Architects + Conservation Consultants, established in 1994. RBA provides specialist services related to managing places of
cultural heritage significance.

During over 20 years experience as a conservation architect and heritage management consultant, Roger
has worked on a wide variety of heritage places, including lighthouses, railway stations, town halls, hospitals, gaols and entire municipalities. Past projects have involved sites ranging in scale from Melbourne’s infamous Vault (‘Yellow Peril’) sculpture through to the Parliament House of Victoria.

By continuing to engage in the contemporary building industry as well as the field of heritage management, Roger has acquired detailed expertise in traditional and new building technologies, enabling him to develop authentic and sustainable remedial conservation strategies. In addition, through exposure to international debate on conservation practice, via AusHeritage (Australia’s primary export network for Cultural Heritage Services) of which he is Deputy Chair, Roger has acquired a keen grasp of evolving conservation management practice, including multi-disciplinary skills exchange and intangible heritage values.



Cameron Robbins


Cameron’s work is based on the interaction with natural forces and the elements. Over the last 20 years he has produced site-specific installations for a wide range of locations around Australia, utilizing a variety of media and techniques including kinetic sculpture, wind and solar powered mechanical systems, sound, and ocean waves.

Cameron is based in Melbourne and studied Fine Art-Sculpture at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and the Victorian College of the Arts during the eighties.

Recent and forthcoming exhibitions/projects include:

Double Vortex- permanent installation in the foyer of CH2, the Melbourne City Council’s new Green building.
Depot- site specific temporary installations at a disused bus depot April 2008
Solar System- a permanent 1:1 billion scale model of the solar system, place around Port Philip Bay. October 2008
Rescueboat Shed- installations and development examining tide and weather in the boatshed on Queenscliffe (Vic) pier. May 2008
Indoor/Outdoor- a permanent wind kinetic installation at Place Gallery, Richmond (Vic) Sept 2008


Renee Cosgrave


Renee Cosgrave was born in 1986 in New Zealand, and lives and works in Melbourne. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours), Monash University, in 2009. Recent Solo Exhibitions include Renee Cosgrave / Merryn Lloyd, The Narrows, Melbourne 2010 and Triangle Project, Monash Student Gallery, Melbourne 2009. Recent Group Exhibitions include (RE) MARK, Eildon Gallery, Alliance de Francaise de Melbourne, 2009; F-O-R-M-A-T, Adelaide Festival, 2009.

Anna Ephraim


Anna Ephraim was born in 1975 in Orange, New South Wales and lives and works in Melbourne. Recent solo exhibitions include LIE OF THE LAND, 2008 and CREATURES OF DARKNESS, 2006 both at The Narrows, Melbourne. The artist has participated in several group exhibitions including THE ECOLOGIES PROJECT at the Monash University Museum of art, 2008; PRINT WORKSHOP at The Narrows, Melbourne 2008; FIRE FIRE at The Narrows, 2007; and THE FALLS CREEK ARTIST CAMP, Latrobe Regional Gallery, Morwell, 2006. Ephraim has been a finalist in The Alice Art Prize, 2008; The Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize, 2003 and 2005-09 and the Mt Buller Art Prize 2007-09


Merryn Lloyd


Merryn Lloyd was born in 1988 in Melbourne, where she lives and works. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at Monash University in 2008. Recent Solo Exhibitions include Renee Cosgrave / Merryn Lloyd, The Narrows, Melbourne 2010 and The Beginning of Something New, Count Six Student Gallery, Monash University, 2008. Recent Collaborative Exhibitions include Kuwaii Installation, in collaboration with Renee Cosgrave, at Penthouse Mouse for Melbourne Fashion Week, 2008. In 2007 she was a student resident of the Monash University Prato Centre, Italy.

Natalie Thomas


Since graduating from the VCA (sculpture) in 1999, Nat Thomas has collaborated with others on a variety of projects. With nat&ali (1999-2005) she exhibited extensively at galleries around Australia, including the National Gallery of Victoria, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and the Institute of Modern Art, Queensland. She has completed Artists Residencies at Viafarini, Milan, Kellerberrin International Artists Residencies in outback Western Australia, Queens College, Melbourne University. Nat Thomas is a founding member of long running artists collective Damp. Damp are currently exhibiting in the Asia Pacific Triennial at Queensland Gallery of Art. An interview showcasing this work appeared on Artscape, Artlife, ABC, in February this year.

Nat has recently worked on performance and photographic projects that include 'Sunshine: Leigh Bowery, the Homecoming project, and at West Space's Tomorrow the World Mini-festival. She won the William and Winifred Bownness prize for Photography at Monash Gallery of Art, 2008, and was a finalist in the National Portrait prize, Canberra, 2009. Earlier this year, Nat undertook a Marrickville Local and National Artists Residency in Sydney, engaging with the collaborative gardening ventures of local residents.



Peter Bennetts

‘Camera at hand, you might find Peter Bennetts on a remote coral atoll in the Central Pacific, topping out on a tropical glacier or skiing a black run in the Alps. When he's not fighting global warming and his own fears you'll find him maintaining the image of those architects & designers most dedicated to the idea of sangfroid. St Kilda, Melbourne-based Bennetts' work appears in The Guardian, Conde Nast Traveller (UK), Travel & Leisure (USA), Time, Domus, Frame and AR.’

Peter Bennetts was born in 1967 in Sydney, Australia. He studied photography at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. In 1994 he joined the Gamma agency, Paris. He became contracted to the FDB/Globalphoto agency in 1998. Peter joined the New York, Liaison agency in 1999. His photo reportages include features photographed in Argentina, Chile & Easter Island, China, France, French Polynesia, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, West Papua, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Thailand, Tuvalu, UK, USA and Vanuatu.


Awards & Collections

Peter’s photographs are featured in private collections, museums and libraries, including Heritage Victoria, Latrobe Regional Gallery, the Powerhouse Museum (Sydney), the Victorian State Library, the WWF collection (Gland, Switzerland) and the United Nations (New York).
Peter’s work has been recognized with awards from the Melbourne Advertising & Design Club. With author Catherin Bull, the book ‘New Conversations with an Old Landscape’ was awarded The American Society of Landscape Architecture’s Communications Award of Merit for ‘A beautifully presented assemblage showing the great diversity of works of landscape architecture. High quality photography and clear text reveal the beauty and diversity of the natural and man-made landscape of Australia. 2004 Professional Awards Jury Comments’


Books
Time & Tide, The islands of Tuvalu, A large format book of the photographer's work with text by Tony Wheeler featuring the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu was published by Lonely Planet in November 2001. Tuvalu is a nation of low lying coral atolls and islands whose existence is threatened by climate change and rising sea levels. Peter has been a frequent visitor to country, documenting its changing patterns of life and the environment.
With author Catherin Bull, Peter was the photographer of New Conversations with the Australian landscape.
Peter's been a contributor to many books published in Australia and around the world. Book contributions include; the Phaidon Atlas of World Architecture, Lonely Planet's The Travel Book; A journey through every Country, The Cities Book and the One Planet series.
